EtherCAT (Ethernet for Control Automation Technology) là giải pháp Ethernet cho tự động hóa công nghiệp, được đặc trưng bởi hiệu suất vượt trội và xử lý đặc biệt đơn giản. EtherCAT cho phép thay thế cấu trúc liên kết hình sao Ethernet bằng cấu trúc đường đơn giản. Theo tùy chọn, EtherCAT cũng có thể được nối dây theo cách “cổ điển” bằng cách sử dụng thiết bị chuyển mạch để tích hợp thêm các thiết bị Ethernet. Master không yêu cầu thẻ cắm đặc biệt và có thể được triển khai trên bất kỳ bộ điều khiển Ethernet hiện có nào bằng cách sử dụng một giao diện rất đơn giản. EtherCAT do đó cũng rất phù hợp cho các ứng dụng điều khiển vừa và nhỏ, nơi nó sẽ mở ra các lĩnh vực ứng dụng mới cho các I / Os phân tán.
